Anbesaaaawww...

OK, you know that commercial where the baby is crying, and someone shoves a fingerful of Anbesol in his mouth, and he immediately shuts up? Well, I tried a similar product for a toothache today, and now I know why the baby stopped bawling. That kid's pain didn't stop - his whole mouth went numb. The look of shock on his face is because he's totally gobsmacked that he's lost all feeling in and motor control of his entire mouth and throat.

I wonder what non-indicated uses people have gotten up to with this stuff...

Um. Yeah. That would work.

As for its intended use, we would put it on a q-tip, then let our infant son teethe on it. He would inevitably put it where it needed to go. We just had to watch and make sure he didn't do anything unnatural with the q-tip :)

Okay, so once when the kiddo was but a wee, teething babe, I was trying to put some orajel on her gums. She hated the taste and was fighting me on this. I, being the older and wiser person in this situation, insisted on doing my damndest to rub the gel all over her gums. She fought quite valiantly and ultimately wound up kicking me right in the nose. I reacted with an "OW!" and put my hand to my nose. The hand that had orajel on the index finger. The end of my left nostril went completely numb for over an hour, and at the same time, I kept sneezing. Freakiest feeling ever, let me tell you!

Never tried to give the kiddo orajel, anbesol or any other numbing agent like that again. For all future teething, we did a nice, safe, cold washcloth or frozen fruit. :P

I read in one of those teen magazines years ago to apply ambesol to your eyebrows before tweezing. Apparently it was supposed to numb the skin before ripping each little individual hair out one by one. Of course i tried it. Sadly, it just made all the little hairs stick together and made them even harder to pluck.
FAIL.
